The UK Research Councils are funding a network of doctoral training partnerships that will produce the next generation of scientists and engineers. This grant supports a system for training PhD students rather than a specific research project. The problem it addresses is a practical one: how to ensure the UK has a steady pipeline of highly skilled researchers who can work across academia, industry, and public services. Without coordinated funding for postgraduate training, individual universities would struggle to provide the breadth of expertise and collaborative opportunities that modern science and engineering demand. If this succeeds, it will produce hundreds of trained researchers over several years. These individuals will go on to work in fields that quietly underpin modern life—from developing more efficient manufacturing processes and improving energy grids to advancing medical diagnostics and strengthening digital infrastructure. The training partnerships also allow universities to pool resources, share expertise, and offer students exposure to problems they would not encounter in a single institution. This is fundamentally an education and skills investment. It does not target a specific technological breakthrough, but it creates the conditions from which breakthroughs emerge—much as past doctoral training schemes have produced researchers who later developed everything from improved water treatment systems to more reliable navigation technologies.
