Durham University will train the next generation of scientists and engineers through a Doctoral Training Partnership, funding PhD students across a wide range of disciplines. This grant addresses a fundamental gap in the UK’s research pipeline: without sustained investment in postgraduate training, the country cannot produce the skilled researchers needed to drive innovation in both academia and industry. The Doctoral Training Partnership provides the financial and structural support for students to pursue three to four years of intensive research, covering everything from stipends and tuition fees to training in transferable skills. If this succeeds, the impact will be diffuse but profound. These PhD graduates will go on to work in universities, startups, large companies, and public-sector labs, strengthening the UK’s capacity for discovery and development. They may contribute to advances in areas such as quantum computing, clean energy, medical imaging, or artificial intelligence—but the specific breakthroughs cannot be predicted at the outset. This is primarily an investment in people, not in a single project or technology. The fundamental science and engineering knowledge these students generate will form the bedrock for future applications, much as past doctoral training programmes have seeded entire industries from semiconductors to biotechnology.
