DTA - University of Warwick

The University of Warwick is receiving funding to train the next generation of doctoral researchers through a Doctoral Training Partnership. This grant addresses a structural gap in the UK's research pipeline: how to systematically produce skilled scientists and engineers who can tackle complex, interdisciplinary problems. Without sustained investment in postgraduate training, the country risks a shortage of qualified researchers in fields critical to economic growth and public wellbeing. If this training succeeds, it will produce cohorts of PhD graduates equipped to work across academia, industry, and government. These researchers will go on to develop new technologies, improve manufacturing processes, strengthen energy systems, and advance medical diagnostics—the infrastructure that quietly underpins modern life. The partnership also fosters collaboration between universities and other research organisations, creating a more connected and resilient research base. This is fundamentally a training and capacity-building grant. It does not target a specific scientific question or technological application. Instead, it invests in the people who will ask those questions and build those applications in the years ahead.
