This grant funds a network of doctoral training partnerships across UK universities, not a single research project. The problem it addresses is straightforward: the UK needs a steady pipeline of skilled researchers to keep its science and engineering sectors competitive. Without coordinated funding for PhD training, individual universities would struggle to provide the breadth of expertise, industry links, and collaborative opportunities that modern research careers demand. The impact is structural rather than scientific. If this funding model works, it will produce a generation of researchers trained not just in their specialist field but in working across institutions and with industry partners. These are the people who will later design better batteries, improve water treatment systems, develop new manufacturing processes, or strengthen the digital infrastructure that underpins everyday life. This is not fundamental science. It is an investment in the people who will do that science. The grant itself does not aim to discover anything—it aims to ensure the discovery workforce exists.
