UCL is training the next generation of engineers and scientists through a partnership with industry that places PhD students directly into company research teams. This funding supports doctoral training where students split their time between university labs and industrial partners. The problem it addresses is a persistent gap between academic research and commercial application—too many promising discoveries never leave the lab because researchers lack experience with real-world manufacturing, product development, or market constraints. By embedding students in companies from the start, the programme builds a workforce that understands both fundamental science and its practical uses. If this succeeds, the UK gains a pipeline of researchers who can translate laboratory breakthroughs into working products, processes, and services. These graduates will strengthen sectors that quietly underpin daily life: pharmaceutical manufacturing, semiconductor fabrication, water treatment systems, energy infrastructure, and digital communications. The programme does not aim for a single breakthrough—it invests in people, producing a cohort of scientists and engineers who will spend their careers turning ideas into things that work.
