Industrial CASE Account - University of Strathclyde 2021

This grant does not fund a specific research project. It provides a framework for the University of Strathclyde to partner with companies so that PhD students can work on industry-defined problems while earning their doctorates. The gap it fills is a practical one: many PhD students conduct fundamental research in academic settings, but fewer have structured opportunities to tackle challenges directly relevant to a business or sector. This programme creates that link by embedding students in a company for part of their training, with the company co-funding the studentship and defining the research question. If the programme succeeds, it produces a cohort of researchers who understand both the rigour of academic science and the constraints of commercial development. For the companies involved, this can shorten the path from a laboratory discovery to a product or process improvement. For the students, it builds career options beyond academia. The specific outcomes depend on the individual projects—they could improve manufacturing efficiency, develop new materials, or refine digital technologies. The value is in the training model itself, not in a single line of inquiry.
