The gap this addresses is a persistent one: fundamental science often produces brilliant ideas that never leave the lab. Companies, particularly small and medium-sized ones, rarely have the capacity to host a PhD student or navigate the bureaucracy of a university partnership. This programme builds a structured bridge between academic research and commercial application. If successful, the programme will produce a cohort of researchers who are fluent in both the language of the laboratory and the constraints of a factory floor or a product development cycle. The immediate impact is on the students themselves—they gain employability and industry-specific skills. The longer-term impact is on the UK’s innovation pipeline: products, processes, and diagnostics that might otherwise have remained academic papers could instead reach the market. This is a training mechanism, not a discovery project, but it is designed to accelerate the journey from discovery to use.
