The UK Economic and Social Research Council gives universities a pot of flexible money—called an Impact Acceleration Account—to turn social science research into real-world change, rather than leaving it on a shelf. This funding solves a persistent problem: research breakthroughs often stall because there is no easy way to test them outside the lab, build partnerships with businesses or charities, or respond quickly when an unexpected opportunity arises. Traditional grants are rigid, locked into plans made years in advance. IAAs let universities act fast—funding a pilot project with a local council, running a public engagement workshop, or helping a researcher spin out a startup—without waiting for a new grant cycle. If this succeeds, the impact is diffuse but tangible. A new tool for predicting job market shifts could reach policymakers months faster. A better understanding of how people use public transport could reshape a city’s bus routes. The money does not dictate what the outcome looks like; it simply removes the friction that keeps good ideas from leaving the university. The result is a quieter, more responsive pipeline from academic insight to everyday infrastructure, public services, and economic decisions.
