The UK's Economic and Social Research Council is handing its funded universities a pot of flexible cash to turn academic discoveries into real-world change, with no strings attached on how they spend it. Research funders typically require detailed plans and rigid budgets, which can strangle unexpected opportunities. A lab might find a promising new approach to reducing energy consumption, but lack the funds to test it with a local council. Or a team studying online misinformation might need to quickly hire a software developer to build a prototype tool. Standard grants cannot adapt fast enough. This IAA funding solves that problem by giving universities the agility to invest in whatever impact activity makes sense at the moment—whether that is a public engagement event, a policy briefing, or a commercial partnership. If this works, the result is not a single breakthrough but a faster, more creative pipeline from social science research into everyday life. A study on commuting patterns could directly inform a city's transport redesign. Research on financial decision-making could lead to better pension advice tools. The impact is diffuse but real: more of the knowledge produced in UK universities actually reaches the people and organisations who can use it.
