The UK’s Economic and Social Research Council gives universities a pot of flexible money—called an Impact Acceleration Account—to turn academic findings into real-world changes, fast. This matters because research impact rarely follows a straight line. A discovery in social science might help a local council redesign a housing policy, or a new data tool could improve how a hospital allocates resources. But universities often lack the agility to seize these opportunities when they arise. Standard grants are locked into fixed plans years in advance. IAAs remove that constraint, letting institutions respond to unexpected openings—a government consultation, a business partnership, a sudden policy need—without waiting for a new funding round. If this works, the result is not a single breakthrough but a faster, more responsive pipeline from research to practice. A sociologist’s study on job training might reshape a government employment programme within months, not years. An economist’s model of energy pricing could feed directly into a regulator’s decision. The funding adds value to existing research by making sure it lands where it can actually be used, rather than sitting in a journal.
