ESRC is handing money to universities with no strings attached, trusting them to decide how best to turn their own research into real-world change. This matters because the gap between a lab discovery and something that actually improves people’s lives is often wide and unpredictable. Traditional grants are rigid—they fund a specific plan written years in advance. By the time the results are in, the best opportunity to apply them may have passed. IAAs give universities the agility to act fast: to spin out a company, run a policy pilot with a local council, or build a prototype, all without waiting for a new grant cycle. If this works, the impact is systemic rather than flashy. A university might use IAA money to help a water company adopt a new filtration method from its chemistry department, or to embed an economist in a government unit rewriting housing benefit rules. The funding quietly greases the wheels that turn academic insight into better infrastructure, smarter regulation, or cheaper manufacturing. It does not produce a single headline result—it makes hundreds of small, timely connections that otherwise would not happen.
