The UK's Economic and Social Research Council is handing its research institutions a pot of flexible cash—no strings attached—to turn academic findings into real-world change before those findings gather dust on a shelf. The problem is straightforward: university research often produces valuable insights into how society works, but the path from a published paper to a policy change, a new public service, or a better business practice is slow, unpredictable, and expensive. Standard grants rarely cover the cost of testing an idea in the real world, running a pilot programme, or building a prototype. This funding—called an Impact Acceleration Account—gives universities the agility to act on unexpected opportunities as they arise, rather than waiting months for a new grant application to be approved. If this works, the impact is diffuse but real. A sociologist might use the money to co-design a homelessness intervention with a local council. An economist could run a rapid experiment with a government department testing a new way to deliver benefits. A data scientist might build a dashboard for a hospital trust. The result is that research stops being an academic exercise and starts quietly improving the systems—social care, housing, public transport, job centres—that people rely on every day.
