UK Biobank is sequencing the entire genomes of 50,000 volunteers as a first step toward decoding all 500,000 participants in its database. This matters because most genetic studies have only looked at small snippets of DNA, missing the full picture of how genes influence disease. A complete genome sequence captures every one of a person’s 3 billion DNA letters, revealing rare variants and structural changes that standard tests overlook. Without this depth, researchers cannot pinpoint the genetic roots of conditions like heart disease, diabetes, or dementia that strike in mid-to-later life. If the full 500,000-person sequencing succeeds, it will create the world’s most detailed whole-genome database linked to health records. Scientists could then identify genetic markers that predict disease risk years before symptoms appear, enabling earlier interventions. The database would also help pharmaceutical companies design drugs that target specific genetic profiles, potentially making treatments more effective and reducing side effects. For the public, this means a shift from one-size-fits-all medicine toward prevention and treatment tailored to an individual’s DNA—though the practical benefits will take years of follow-on research to realise.
