The UK is facing an increasing risk of outbreaks from new viruses that can cause serious harm to human health. This is because humans are coming into contact with animals that can carry these viruses more often, in part due to changes in the way we live and interact with the environment. To prevent and control outbreaks, a new plan called the Preparedness Platform has been created by a team of experts at the CVR. The plan aims to better understand, prevent, detect and respond to viral threats to human health. It has been developed with the help of partners from the UK and key centres around the world. The Preparedness Platform will use new technologies and research to improve how we monitor our surroundings to identify potential outbreaks, and to quickly respond if one occurs. The team has access to many important tools and resources including advanced molecular laboratories for advances sequencing methods and scientifical and medical experts. We have recently adapted our research to respond to emerging viruses, as in the recent COVID outbreak, to mpox and to the recent outbreak of hepatitis in children and now we aim to develop tools using enhanced diagnostic surveillance to help to be better prepared in the future.
