The UK Research Councils fund thousands of doctoral students each year through Doctoral Training Partnerships (DTPs)—structured programmes that provide postgraduate training across universities and research organisations. This matters because the UK’s research base depends on a steady pipeline of skilled scientists, engineers, and scholars. DTPs are the primary mechanism for training the next generation of researchers, but the system is complex: funding flows through multiple routes, consortia, and lead organisations. Without clear, accessible information about how these partnerships are structured and funded, prospective students and institutions struggle to navigate the landscape. The potential impact is straightforward but fundamental. By making the structure and funding routes of DTPs transparent—through the UKRI portal and common terminology—this work ensures that students, supervisors, and administrators can easily identify where training opportunities exist and how to access them. This is an infrastructure project for the research system itself: it keeps the pipeline of skilled researchers flowing, which in turn sustains everything from medical breakthroughs to engineering advances. There is no immediate practical application beyond better information access, but that access is what makes the entire system work.
