Director of population health improvement network of clusters

In plain English

AI plain-English summary

A new UK-wide network of research clusters will coordinate efforts to tackle the root causes of poor health and the stark health gaps between different groups in the population. This matters because where you live, your income, and your job can shave years off your life. These "determinants of health"—things like housing, air quality, and access to green space—affect everyone, but they hit some communities far harder than others. The UKRI Population Health Network brings together four research clusters spread across the UK to study how to improve public health for the whole population, not just treat illness after it appears. The funding establishes a central hub in Cambridge to coordinate the network and includes a Collaboration and Innovation Fund to connect the clusters with other initiatives. If this succeeds, it could reshape how public health policy is designed and implemented. Instead of piecemeal local projects, the network could produce coordinated, evidence-based strategies that local authorities, the NHS, and government departments actually use. The impact would be invisible to most people—cleaner air, better housing policies, fewer people dying early from preventable causes—but it would quietly reduce the unfair differences in health that currently divide the UK.

The UKRI Population Health Network is funded as part of one of the UKRI strategic research themes aimed at improving health and wellbeing. It will be formed of four research clusters across the United Kingdom that are studying how to improve public health and reduce unfair differences in health between sub-groups in the population by tackling the determinants of health that affect all people in the population. This funding request is to establish the organisational hub in Cambridge to co-ordinate the Network as a whole. The funding will also support Collaboration and Innovation Fund (CIF) to ensure the Network operates as a whole and to connect it with other initiatives.
