STFC Glasgow PaA 2023 DTP

The UK Research Councils are funding a new cohort of doctoral students through a single training partnership led by the University of Glasgow. This grant addresses the need to train the next generation of scientists and engineers in physics and astronomy. Without sustained investment in postgraduate education, the UK risks losing its capacity to conduct world-leading fundamental research and to supply skilled specialists to industries that depend on advanced scientific expertise. If this training programme succeeds, it will produce a steady pipeline of PhD graduates equipped to work in academia, national laboratories, and the private sector. These researchers will go on to design experiments, analyse data, and build instruments for telescopes, particle accelerators, and space missions. Their work may also feed into technologies that people rarely think about—such as satellite navigation systems, medical imaging devices, and high-performance computing—all of which rely on the same fundamental physics skills developed during a PhD. This project is primarily about education and skills development. It does not target a specific practical application. However, past investments in similar doctoral training have produced researchers who later developed everything from MRI scanners to the algorithms behind Wi-Fi.
