STFC UCL Space 2023 DTP

The UK Space Agency is funding a new cohort of doctoral students to train the next generation of space scientists and engineers. This grant supports a Doctoral Training Partnership (DTP), which provides postgraduate training across a range of space-related disciplines. The problem it addresses is a skills gap: the UK’s growing space sector needs highly trained researchers and professionals, but advanced training requires coordinated, long-term investment. Without such programmes, the pipeline of talent risks drying up. If this training succeeds, it will produce specialists who go on to work in areas that quietly underpin modern life—satellite navigation, weather forecasting, telecommunications, Earth observation for agriculture and disaster response, and fundamental space science. These are systems most people never think about until they fail. The project is primarily about education and skills development, not a specific scientific discovery. However, the students trained through this DTP will conduct original research across space science, from astrophysics to instrumentation. Past DTPs have led to unexpected breakthroughs—for example, spin-off technologies from space sensors now used in medical imaging. This programme plants seeds whose practical fruits may take a decade or more to emerge.
