NERON – the Network for European Research ON Jewish life and antisemitism – is a collaborative initiative led by the European University Institute and the Institute for Jewish Policy Research. It aims to establish a resilient, inclusive and methodologically robust research network to support the EU’s strategy on combating antisemitism and fostering Jewish life (2021–2030). By working to build a Europe-wide infrastructure, NERON will connect researchers, policymakers and civil society actors to enhance the quality and policy relevance of research in this field.NERON’s work will be structured around three iterative phases: mapping and networking, workshopping and co-creation, and reporting and piloting. It will identify gaps in research provision, improve methodological standards, and develop mechanisms to strengthen research-policy links. The project will also explore models for institutionalising the field, culminating in a strategic plan for a sustainable research hub.Conceptually, NERON is grounded in three intersecting frames: the quality of Jewish life, empirical impact and communal interaction. These guide its efforts to balance attention between antisemitism and Jewish life, foster policy-relevant research, and bridge the gap between academia and Jewish communities. The project will engage five key stakeholder groups—researchers, policymakers, civil society organisations, media, and the public—through targeted communication, inclusive outreach, and open science practices.NERON’s ambition is to transform a fragmented research landscape into a coherent, self-aware field that contributes to Jewish community life, cultural cohesion, and the promotion of democratic values in Europe.
