Institutional Strategic Support Fund 2011/12.

The University of Glasgow is using Wellcome Trust funding to run a central hub—Glasgow Polyomics—that generates and analyses vast amounts of biological data for researchers across multiple disciplines. This matters because modern biology increasingly depends on "omics" technologies—genomics, proteomics, metabolomics—that produce enormous datasets. Most individual research groups lack the equipment, software, and expertise to handle this data themselves. The fund bridges that gap, providing access to high-throughput data generation and analysis tools that would otherwise be out of reach for many scientists. If the fund succeeds, it will accelerate a wide range of biomedical research at the university—from understanding disease mechanisms to developing new treatments. It also supports early-career researchers through fellowships, and spreads knowledge through training courses, seminars, and public outreach in schools and community events. The impact is primarily on research infrastructure and capacity-building rather than any single application. This is a flexible, enabling grant: it does not target a specific disease or technology, but instead strengthens the entire research ecosystem so that future discoveries—whatever they turn out to be—become possible.
