Institutional Strategic Support Fund 2011/12.

The University of York has received £1 million from the Wellcome Trust to expand its Centre for Chronic Diseases and Disorders (C2D2), which tackles conditions ranging from neurological disorders and mental health problems to cancers and chronic infections. This funding matters because chronic diseases are among the most persistent and costly challenges in healthcare. The Centre brings together researchers from molecular biology, biochemistry, history, and sociology, using tools such as MRI scanners, genomic sequencing, computer simulations, and low-temperature plasmas. This interdisciplinary approach aims to uncover insights that single-discipline research might miss. Over the next two years, C2D2 will fund new research projects, support early-career researchers, and launch a public engagement programme with local schools to teach children about health, disease, and disability. If successful, the Centre could accelerate the translation of fundamental discoveries into practical treatments or diagnostic tools for chronic conditions. The school partnership may also improve health literacy from an early age. This is primarily a capacity-building and infrastructure grant rather than a single focused experiment, but it enables a wide range of future breakthroughs.
