Xenopus frogs (X. laevis and X. tropicalis) are among the most versatile model organisms, contributing to our understanding of biochemistry, physiology, metabolism, cancer, gene regulation, cell signalling, and indeed virtually all aspects of molecular, cellular and developmental biology. The current objectives of the EXRC are: to support scientists by providing wild type and genetically altered Xenopus, antibodies, DNA resources, research hotel facilities and a ready supply of oocytes. All of these are accessible via the searchable bioinformatics resource Xenbase, which links frog lines and molecular reagents with their cognate gene. EXRC also enables occasional users to work with Xenopus without having to hold their own frogs. This application is to renew funding for EXRC to allow it to continue to provide the resources listed above and to extend its objectives by: providing additional molecular (BACs, ORFeome clones), cellular (egg extracts) and animal (inbred J-strain X. lae vis, transgenic lines expressing fluorescent protein markers) resources. The EXRC aims to make all aspects of Xenopus research more efficient, contributing to a wide range of biomedical research, increasing cost effectiveness, and enhancing the 3Rs.
