WT-MRC Clinical Research Training Fellowship Partnership

The MRC will appoint five additional Clinical Research Training Fellows between 2017 and 2021, funded by Wellcome. This matters because clinical research fellowships are a critical pipeline for training the next generation of doctor-scientists. Without dedicated funding, talented clinicians who want to split their time between treating patients and conducting research often cannot afford to do so. The gap is a shortage of people who can translate laboratory discoveries into real treatments for patients. If this succeeds, five more clinicians will complete PhD-level research while maintaining their medical practice. Over their careers, these individuals will lead studies that could improve how the NHS diagnoses and treats conditions ranging from cancer to heart disease. The impact is not immediate or flashy—it is a slow, structural investment in the people who will quietly improve medical care for decades. This is a straightforward capacity-building project. It does not test a new drug or build a new device. It funds people, not experiments. The payoff will come years later, when these fellows publish findings, train their own students, and change clinical guidelines.
