Translational Partnerships Award: 3 Year Renewal

In plain English

AI plain-English summary

The University of Cambridge is expanding its programme that helps researchers turn lab discoveries into real-world products and treatments. This matters because many promising research findings never leave the university. Academics often lack the business knowledge, industry connections, or legal support needed to develop a drug, diagnostic tool, or medical device. The programme—a renewal of the iTPA—provides dedicated staff, funding, and guidance to bridge that gap. It specifically aims to include early-career researchers and projects from a wider range of scientific fields, not just biomedicine. If successful, the programme could accelerate the journey from fundamental science to tangible benefits for human health and wellbeing. This might mean faster development of new therapies, more efficient medical devices, or innovations in climate and environment technologies. The university aims to become the UK’s leading translational environment by 2025, with measurable impact on health by 2030. The goal is to make this support sustainable beyond the period of Wellcome’s funding, so the infrastructure for turning research into impact outlasts the grant itself.

View original technical description
Renewal of the iTPA will further widen access to translational support across the University. This will make beginning and navigating the translational journey easier for all researchers and increase the diversity of the translational portfolio both in terms of thematic area and forms of impact. Our vision is to catalyse this shift and become the UK's leading University translational environment and practice leader by 2025, maximise the societal benefit from our world class research and have tangible impact on human health and wellbeing by 2030. Through its aims and objectives, the proposed renewal will drive growth in the areas of opportunity identified and will scale up intervention mechanisms to further broaden engagement with strong focus on ECRs with breadth of inclusivity and widen the thematic areas by developing a strong portfolio with a focus on impact, multi-disciplinary innovation and a sustainable output beyond the period of Wellcome's support.
