Wellcome Trust gGmbH

Wellcome has opened a permanent legal office in Berlin, called Wellcome Trust gGmbH, funded by a five-year grant from its UK headquarters. This matters because the UK’s departure from the European Union threatened to weaken Wellcome’s ability to influence health policy and build partnerships across Europe. Before Brexit, Wellcome could operate effectively from London alone. After Brexit, it needed a physical presence inside the EU to maintain its voice in European health debates, to shape the priorities of major global health donors like Germany, and to keep its research agenda aligned with EU funding streams. The Germany office was initially a test; it proved that a local presence could generate policy wins and expand networks. Now the question is whether a fully-fledged legal entity can sustain and deepen that influence. If the gGmbH succeeds, Wellcome will retain a strong seat at European policy tables on health challenges such as antimicrobial resistance, climate change, and pandemic preparedness. For the public, this means that UK-funded research priorities—and the discoveries they enable—will continue to inform European health decisions that affect drug approvals, disease surveillance, and research collaborations. For the research community, it secures a channel for UK scientists to access EU funding and partnerships that might otherwise close.
