IAMHRF: Convene, Curate, Challenge & Celebrate for Increased Research Impact

In plain English

AI plain-English summary

The International Alliance of Mental Health Research Funders (IAMHRF) is the only global network where funders of mental health research coordinate their spending and strategy. The group is now expanding its operations and preparing to become an independent organisation. This matters because mental health research is chronically underfunded and fragmented. Individual funders often work in isolation, duplicating efforts or missing opportunities to pool resources. The IAMHRF fills this gap by creating a shared space where funders can agree on common measurement standards, share data tools, and coordinate funding decisions. It also brings in people with lived experience of mental health conditions to help shape research priorities. If successful, the IAMHRF could transform how mental health research is funded globally. Instead of scattered projects, the sector would become more coherent and efficient. Better coordination means research money goes further, studies produce comparable data, and promising interventions reach people faster. The group’s new strategic plan focuses on convening funders, curating evidence, challenging current practices around diversity and equity, and celebrating successes. Over the next three years, the IAMHRF will expand these activities while transitioning to full independence, creating a permanent infrastructure for smarter, more collaborative mental health research funding.

View original technical description
The IAMHRF is the only global avenue for mental health research funders to convene and take joint action. It has been instrumental in providing key funding and lived experience analyses across the sector, as well as in driving progress on the adoption of common measures. Building on input from its members, the IAMHRF has developed a new strategic plan centred on four pillars: Convening funders and members of the broader ecosystem to facilitate collaboration and knowledge exchange; Creating and Curating evidence and resources to support better informed and co-ordinated decision-making and resource-allocation in the sector; Challenging and evolving practice (e.g., around lived experience and diversity and equity questions); And Celebrating the successes of mental health research. The application is to support the IAMHRF’s operational costs over the next 3 years as it moves to a new fiscal host, expands its range of activities in line with its new strategic plan, and readies itself to become a fully independent organisation. The proposed activities align with Wellcome’s strategy to support transformative research, informed by lived experience, alongside underpinning efforts to harmonise measures, improve data tools and resources, create a more coherent mental health science sector, and stimulate demand for improved interventions.
