Long-term global scenarios have underpinned research and assessment of climate change for four decades. Over the past decade, a scenario framework based on the Shared Socioeconomic Pathways or SSPs facilitated integrated research by providing more detailed socioeconomic and political conditions as inputs into projections of future risks in a changing climate. To facilitate more robust and policy-relevant projections of how future health burdens and health systems could change under different climate and development scenarios, this project will extend the SSPs to provide modellers with a toolkit of consistent and standardised inputs. The project will provide health sector specific narratives and quantitative extensions of key variables, including population health and health system baselines and future trends, demographic change, and adaptation pathways under the SSPs. An initial workshop will determine the exact work packages, process, and author teams. The results will be made widely available through the IIASA Extensions Explorer, webinars, and publications. A guidance document will provide best practices for projecting the health risks of climate change at local to international scales.
