Transforming the experience of dementia in Kenya through community-led action and support

This study aims to build local research capacity and deliver insights that inform national strategies and contribute to efforts to reduce global inequalities in dementia care in Kenya. Conducted by a Kenyan researcher with deep community ties and global research experience, this project will foster cultural sensitivity, social justice, and equity in dementia care. Dementia is a rising yet overlooked public health challenge in many African countries, where there is no national policy, limited public awareness, training and limited research. As ageing populations grow, and with formal services still developing, traditional caregiving structures are strained, and family members bear the pressure of dementia care without adequate support. This research aims to address critical gaps in knowledge, policy, and practice by generating an in-depth, intersectional understanding of the lived experiences of people with dementia in rural, urban, and Maasai pastoralist communities in Kenya. A qualitative approach grounded in Participatory Action Research and Narrative inquiry will be implemented. Action learning sets, participatory film, and multiple interviewing methods will enable understanding of socio-cultural beliefs, systemic challenges, and community perspectives of dementia aligned with local culture. Co-produced outputs will help raise awareness, reduce dementia stigma, while promoting sustainable, community development and co- produced policy briefs.
