Single-cell technologies have revolutionized cell biology, allowing for unprecedented insights into the molecular mechanisms underlying disease at a single-cell resolution. Despite bearing the highest burden of infectious diseases, sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) and Southeast Asia (SEA) remain underrepresented in the human single-cell genomics database. To address this critical gap, we propose establishing a collaborative single-cell genomics platform across five Wellcome Africa and Asia programmes (AAPs) - MLW, AHRI, KEMRI-Wellcome, OUCRU, and MORU. This initiative aims to contribute to the diversification of the global single-cell genomics database and enhance our understanding of human health and infectious diseases in regions with high pathogen transmission and disease prevalence. The programme will encompass four work packages focused on strengthening capacity and fostering collaboration while addressing locally relevant disease challenges. By integrating centralised training, our programme will facilitate the institutionalisation of this disruptive technology, ensuring that insights gained will contribute to meaningful advancements to benefit underprivileged and underrepresented populations.
