ICTP - IAP - IPCC Chapter Scientists Support Programme

The IPCC is recruiting 50–60 early-career climate scientists from developing countries and former Soviet-bloc nations to help write its next major assessment report. This matters because the IPCC’s Seventh Assessment Report (AR7) will shape global climate policy for years, yet the scientists who produce it have historically come overwhelmingly from wealthy nations. Scientists from developing and transition economies bring firsthand knowledge of the floods, droughts, and heatwaves that hit their regions hardest, but they often lack the funding and connections to join the report-writing process. This programme pays for their travel to author meetings, covers their time, and handles logistics so they can work alongside lead authors. If it succeeds, AR7 will draw on a wider range of expertise and lived experience, making its conclusions more relevant to the countries most affected by climate change. The 50–60 scientists will also gain international visibility, stronger publication networks, and the skills to lead future assessments themselves—building long-term scientific capacity in regions that currently have little voice in global climate science.
