This project investigates how long-term exposure to nitrogen dioxide (NO₂) - a traffic-related air pollutant - affects brain chemistry in healthy adults. Using advanced magnetic resonance spectroscopy (¹H-MRS) and quantitative susceptibility mapping (QSM), the study will examine whether individuals living in areas with higher NO₂ exposure show measurable differences in glutamate levels and brain iron accumulation. Modelled air pollution data from Imperial College London will be used to classify residential exposure across South London, and participants with at least 10 years of stable residence will be recruited. This pilot study will generate preliminary effect sizes and assess the feasibility of integrating environmental modelling with neuroimaging. The findings will inform future research into the environmental determinants of psychiatric vulnerability, supporting the development of early detection strategies and policy-relevant evidence on air quality and brain health.
