NRDC Extreme Heat Campaign: Raising Heat Awareness Through Film and TV

In plain English

AI plain-English summary

Hollywood scriptwriters will weave extreme heat dangers and safety measures into film and TV storylines over the next two years. This campaign addresses a critical gap: although extreme heat is the deadliest weather-related hazard in the US, public awareness of its risks and simple protective actions—hydration, shade, checking on neighbours—remains low. The Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) will use its existing relationships with entertainment industry storytellers to embed accurate, actionable heat-health messages into popular onscreen narratives, reaching audiences far beyond traditional public health campaigns. If successful, the campaign could shift how millions of people perceive and respond to heatwaves. Viewers might absorb—without a lecture—that heat illness is preventable, that certain groups (older adults, outdoor workers, people without air conditioning) are especially vulnerable, and that small actions save lives. The secondary benefit could be increased public support for policies that protect at-risk communities, such as cooling centres, tree planting, or utility assistance programmes. This is not fundamental science; it is a targeted communications intervention using the proven reach of Hollywood storytelling to turn awareness into behaviour change.

NRDC will leverage its cross-sector expertise—led by its Rewrite the Future (RTF) team, in collaboration with Entertainment Partnerships, the Environment, Equity & Justice Center (EEJC), and the ScienceOffice—to create a two-year Extreme Heat Campaign in pursuit of the following goals:1. To convey the dangers of extreme heat and solutions to heat illness in ways that reach a broad audience and increase public awareness (which could have a secondary benefit of increasing support for policies that protect vulnerable populations); and2. To contribute to the reduction of avoidable heat-related illness and death. The campaign will adapt the existing strategies and relationships built by the RTF team and focus them on increasing public awareness of the dangers of extreme heat, as well as safety measures and adaptation strategies, through the onscreen representation of extreme heat related issues in film and TV. The campaign will leverage the exceptional reach of storytellers across Hollywood to influence broader attitudes on extreme heat and motivate action to help people stay safe and care for their communities amid rising temperatures.
