Support for IPCC's 7th assessment report meetings

A climate scientist will attend four international meetings between 2025 and 2028 to help write the next major UN climate report. The researcher has been selected as a Lead Author for a chapter on responses to losses and damages from climate change, and as Co-Lead for a cross-chapter paper focused on the world’s least developed countries. These roles involve shaping the chapter’s structure, drafting the text through multiple revisions, and finalising key messages. The meetings are essential for coordinating with other authors and ensuring the report is rigorous and complete. This matters because the IPCC reports are the primary source of scientific consensus that governments, funders, and international bodies use to make decisions about climate policy and finance. The chapter on losses and damages addresses a gap in understanding how countries can respond to the irreversible harms of climate change—such as lost homes, crops, or cultural heritage—that adaptation cannot prevent. The cross-chapter paper ensures that the specific vulnerabilities of the poorest nations are not overlooked. If the report succeeds, it will provide clearer guidance on what kinds of support are needed for communities already experiencing climate impacts.
