King's BHF Centre researchers are working to transform how heart failure is understood, diagnosed, and treated. Heart failure affects hundreds of thousands of people in the UK, leaving many with debilitating breathlessness, fatigue, and a significantly shortened life expectancy. Current treatments are limited, and doctors often struggle to predict which patients will deteriorate rapidly or respond to specific therapies. The Centre's strategy is to build an environment where scientists and clinicians collaborate across disciplines—from molecular biology to data science—to uncover the fundamental mechanisms driving heart failure. This includes identifying new biomarkers for early diagnosis, developing better ways to stratify patients by risk, and testing innovative therapies. If successful, the work could shift heart failure from a condition managed reactively to one that is anticipated and treated earlier, improving both survival and quality of life. The Centre also aims to train the next generation of cardiovascular researchers, ensuring that progress continues beyond the grant period. This is primarily fundamental and translational science; immediate clinical breakthroughs are not guaranteed, but the infrastructure and talent pipeline it creates are essential for long-term progress.
