Asteroidea- a flexible photonic quantum computing testbed for machine learning

In plain English

AI plain-English summary

ORCA Computing is building a working photonic quantum computer testbed in the UK that integrates multiple novel technologies into a single platform for the first time. Most quantum computing testbeds test hardware or software in isolation, making it slow and difficult to understand how the full system behaves. This project solves that by combining everything—light-based processors, control electronics, and system software—into one infrastructure. That lets developers characterise and benchmark the entire stack at once, accelerating progress toward useful quantum capabilities. If successful, this testbed will give UK researchers and industry users a practical tool to explore hybrid quantum-classical machine learning. It could eventually improve how machine learning models are trained, with downstream effects on pattern recognition, optimisation, and data analysis across sectors like logistics, drug discovery, and financial modelling. The project also strengthens the UK supply chain for photonic components, making advanced quantum hardware more accessible to domestic developers. This is applied engineering, not fundamental science—the goal is a working system that users can actually run algorithms on.

View original technical description
In this project ORCA Computing will deliver a first-of-its-kind operational photonic quantum computing testbed featuring multiple highly innovative, novel technologies in a single infrastructure platform to the UK before the rest of the world. The single infrastructure approach will enable more rapid technology characterisation, thus accelerating discovery and progress by quantum application developers to unlock the ultimate value of quantum computing for public service and industry. In doing so, it will both coordinate and bolster the UK supply chain for photonic components as well as accelerate the growth of user adoption of quantum computing for both developer and industry users. It will unlock innovation and readiness by computing service providers, developers, and end-users with the ability to characterise and benchmark a full stack of quantum hardware and software technologies. Through the system software and developer interface, it will allow full exploration of photonic systems and their application in areas including hybrid quantum/classical machine learning towards useful quantum capabilities.
