Glasgow City Region College Innovation Network

Six further education colleges across Glasgow and its surrounding region are pooling their resources to create a network of innovation centres, each one focused on a specific local industry cluster. This matters because small and medium-sized employers in the Glasgow City Region often lack the time, money, or expertise to adopt new processes or products on their own. The colleges—which already train the local workforce—are well placed to bridge that gap, but until now they have operated independently, offering fragmented support. The network aims to replace that patchwork with a single, coordinated system. If the network works as planned, a manufacturing firm in one part of the region could access the same specialist equipment and advice as a logistics company on the other side of the city. Employers in priority clusters—such as engineering, digital technologies, or life sciences—would get joined-up help to modernise their operations, potentially boosting productivity and creating new jobs. The project is not fundamental science; it is a practical, regional infrastructure experiment. Success would mean a more coherent innovation ecosystem for the entire Glasgow City Region, with colleges acting as permanent hubs rather than occasional helpers.
