Dementia Forward is building a new service model specifically for people whose dementia begins before the age of 65, an age group that existing dementia care largely ignores. Young onset dementia differs from dementia in older people in its symptoms, progression, and the life stage at which it strikes—people may still be working, raising children, or managing mortgages. Standard dementia services, designed for the over-65s, often fail to meet these needs. This project aims to turn that around by embedding research evidence directly into the charity's service design, creating care that is personalised and built on what actually works for this group. If successful, the work could set a new national benchmark for young onset dementia support across the UK. Rather than adapting generic dementia services, other providers would have a tested, evidence-based model to follow. The immediate impact is on the quality of everyday life for people living with young onset dementia and their families—more appropriate support, fewer gaps in care, and services that match the reality of their lives.
