This project aims to develop a new biomass supply chain in Scotland utilising an unexploited source of high value protein, fish oils and other nutrients. Through the application of Industrial Biotechnology processes to Scottish seafood processors, we aim to facilitate the adoption of sustainable manufacture of feed ingredients to an industry burdened by the cost of 'waste' disposal. This project builds on extensive studies on the use of our chitosan formulations for the recovery of proteins and oils from seafood processing factories in Scotland and extends the breadth of protein sources to include recovered mollusc meats with amino acid profiles akin to fishmeal. Biomass supply chain development requires investment in sustainable manufacturing technology by the Scottish seafood processing industry. This project will be the first step in quantifying the potential feed value of recovered proteins and oils through carefully-designed aquaculture feeding trials with a range of different species.
