Curcumin, the active compound in turmeric, dissolves so poorly in water that the body absorbs almost none of it, rendering most supplements clinically useless. 6Degrees Bioscience has developed a plant-based micelle technology that wraps curcumin molecules in a water-soluble shell, dramatically boosting absorption. But the company cannot precisely measure how stable these micelles are or how reliably they release their payload. Without that analytical capability, they cannot scientifically validate their product claims, secure regulatory approvals, or compete in global markets. This project, in partnership with ASTUTE, will develop advanced analytical techniques to characterise micelle stability, particle integrity, and release profiles. It will also include cell-based studies to confirm that the micelles themselves are non-toxic and that curcumin is actually taken up by cells. If successful, the work will replace costly international lab testing with in-house precision, accelerate product development, and open new markets in nutraceuticals and functional foods. For the UK, it strengthens domestic R&D and manufacturing capacity in a rapidly growing global curcumin market worth billions.

6Degrees Bioscience (6DBS) is a UK-based biotech company pioneering advanced plant-based supplements. In collaboration with ASTUTE, this project aims to optimise micelle-encapsulated curcumin formulations, improving stability, consistency, and analytical precision to enhance product performance. Curcumin, a lipophilic phytochemical from turmeric (_Curcuma longa L._), has long been used in traditional medicine and is increasingly supported by clinical evidence as a potential therapeutic for chronic inflammation and cancer. However, curcumin's low water solubility results in poor bioavailability, limiting its clinical effectiveness. Kurk's trade-secret, plant-based micelle technology revolutionises curcumin absorption by encapsulating molecules in a stable, water-soluble structure, providing: * Greater Absorption & Bioavailability - Maximising therapeutic potential. * Faster Onset & Effectiveness - Allowing improved dosing outcomes. * Higher Potency - Requiring lower doses for the same effect. * Improved Stability - Ensuring long-term product viability. Our inability to fully assess product stability and particle integrity is a key concern preventing us from fully optimising our formulations and differentiating us from competitors. Without a precise measurement method, scientific confirmation, potential regulatory approvals, and further clinical research are hindered. This is especially crucial for our new formulations and restricts our ability to compete globally and expand into new markets. This project, in collaboration with ASTUTE, will refine micelle-encapsulation methods to ensure better dispersibility, controlled release, and reproducibility. It will remove a major obstacle towards scientifically validating our product claims, bioavailability and product quality to ensuring customers receive the most clinically effective products. Biological measurements of performance including cellular uptake and release, i.e. qualifying both fabrication and analytical testing methods to inform cellular interactions, have now become standard in fabrication development and analytical optimisation. This project focuses on development of analytical processes specific to the micellar-particle optimisation, including cell-based studies to evaluate biocompatibility (micelle-only toxicity), cellular uptake in basic epithelial models, as well as determining release profiles within the cellular environment. For 6DBS, this research will strengthen product confirmation, reduce reliance on costly international laboratory testing, and accelerate product development. The improved formulation and analytical framework will support product consistency assessment, open new market opportunities in nutraceuticals and functional foods, and position 6DBS as a leader in curcumin-based innovation. Additionally, the project enhances UK-based R&D capabilities, manufacturing, creating potential for future collaborations and commercial expansion through a highly valuable exportable product for the growing global curcumin market.
