Lithium metal solid-state batteries (LiSSBs) are promising candidates for next-generation batteries due to their high energy density and non-flammable nature. They hold promise for accelerating the storage of clean energy sources like tidal, wind, and solar energy, as well as advancing the development of electric vehicles. Pulsed current charging is expected to extend battery lifetime and enhance safety. Although some reports have pointed this out, the lack of comprehensive mechanistic understanding and electrochemical model development makes it difficult to draw scalable conclusions or determine the optimal frequency of pulse charging. The primary goal of this proposal, Pulse Charging for Lithium Metal Solid-State Batteries (PulseLiSSBs), is to extend the lifetime of LiSSBs by optimizing the battery charging protocols. This requires first understanding the internal electrochemical mechanisms under pulse charging and studying the impact of pulsed current on the lithium metal anode interface, contact impedance, and dendrite growth through experiments and electrochemical modelling. Finally, by simulation, the optimized parameters for pulsed current frequency and duty cycle will be selected.PulseLiSSBs project will be executed by experienced researchers who will work closely with a supervisor with a strong background in battery mechanism analysis, electrochemical modelling, and charging strategies. The fellow will also benefit from the research team's experience in Denmark and Germany, where Denmark has a robust battery testing research group, and Germany has a strong team focused on battery mechanism analysis. The project aligns with the Horizon Europe mission and can contribute to the EU's 2050 Climate-neutrality Goals and the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals.
