The integration of autonomous vehicles (AV) in our transport systems has the strong potential to revolutionise the way we travel and transport goods. As part of the Connected, Cooperative and Automated Mobility (CCAM) system, these vehicles promise safer roads, 24/7 availability, higher efficiency of transport systems as well as the reduction of economic and environmental costs. However, the tipping point for large-scale deployment of CCAM systems has not been reached. RemoteReadyMove addresses a key missing piece: Remote Operation (RO). By allowing a human operator to support a vehicle from a distance – monitoring, assisting or taking over in complex situations – the operational design domain (ODD) of the AV is complemented. This leads to increased availability, robustness, resilience and attractiveness of CCAM systems. The aim of RemoteReadyMove is to build, validate and deploy a technological, economically viable and societal-ready RO framework, as one major pillar of the future CCAM system. To do this, the project applies a Societal Readiness methodology, which puts the needs and expectations of various stakeholders to the center of RO processes. The project encompasses six pilot sites across Sweden, Germany, France, Spain, and Greece, focusing on the technological advancement of components and the evaluation of various RO applications from different use case areas including the transport of people and goods. By modelling the complex system-of-systems of RO and comparing the results from the pilots, RemoteReadyMove generates guidelines and policy recommendations, a safety assurance framework, and updates of CCAM roadmaps dealing with RO issues that need to be addressed to enable the large-scale deployment of CCAM systems. Accordingly, RemoteReadyMove proves that AVs can be safe, efficient and socially accepted when supported by a robust RO backbone, paving the way for a new generation of sustainable and smart mobility and logistics services across the EU.
