Trauma Healing through AI-Augmented Storytelling Among Gender-Based Violence Survivors in the UK: A Comparative Study of White Scottish Women and Arab Refugee and Immigrant Women.

GBVHeal-AI explores trauma, stigma, and healing by developing a survivor-led, AI-assisted storytelling intervention for women affected by gender-based violence (GBV). It focuses on two distinct yet intersecting groups: White Scottish women, and Arab refugee and immigrant women, who face disproportionate levels of GBV throughout migration, resettlement, and daily life. This project is urgent given the widespread inaccessibility of culturally aligned, trauma-informed services for these populations, and addresses longstanding gaps in mental health care, narrative inclusion, and survivor-led recovery.The action is innovative in designing a comparative, participatory intervention that evaluates the healing potential of storytelling across cultural and migratory contexts. It draws on trauma-informed narrative practice, postcolonial trauma theory, and ethical AI design to co-create digital and written narratives with survivors. Particular attention is given to how trauma is processed through cultural expression, social exclusion, and institutional harm, including racialized asylum procedures, language barriers, and the weaponization of immigration status. The project aims to restore narrative agency while generating inclusive, disaggregated data for trauma care innovation.Hence, the fellow will be hosted at the University of Glasgow (UK), working under the supervision of Prof. Zoe Strachan, acclaimed author and expert in narrative practice. The fellow will receive interdisciplinary training in trauma psychology, digital storytelling, AI ethics, and participatory research methodologies.GBVHeal-AI contributes urgently needed tools and models in line with EU priorities on mental health, gender equality, inclusion, and digital innovation, and will address the following question: How can AI-augmented, survivor-led storytelling promote trauma healing among women from culturally diverse and migrant backgrounds affected by GBV?
