Vaccination offers the most cost-effective approach to infectious disease control but new vaccines are need for many diseases of human and livestock, particularly in developing countries. There is a translational gap between academic research on vaccines and late phase II trials, the point where proof of concept has been demonstrated and large vaccine companies will invest to achieve licensure. The new Jenner Institute, which spans activities at both the University of Oxford and the Institute for Animal Health aims to fill this translational gap and is developing promising new vaccines for a range of human and veterinary infectious diseases. The Institute aims to exploit the many synergies in co-development of vaccines for human and livestock diseases, and holds a leading place in the development of new vectored vaccine technology, particularly for diseases of developing countries. This application seeks funding to underpin this strategy and to provide core translational facilities, especially for vector development, adjuvant provision and immunomonitoring. A further major goal will be capacity building in vaccinology both in the UK and, with partner institutions, in developing countries, through new short course teaching and dedicated studentships.
