I will develop an evidence-based framework for interpreting recent and future changes in the distributions of soil-transmitted helminths and lymphatic filariasis across in sub-Saharan Africa. I will also evaluate the performance and cost-effectiveness of alternative approaches for the monitoring and surveillance of these infections. These goals will be achieved through a multidisciplinary approach encompassing epidemiology, geostatistics and health economics. Specifically, I will develop a serie s of geospatial risk maps for different time periods and analyze the influence of specific interventions and secular socioeconomic changes on risks over time. Using a combination of computer simulation, field studies and cost-effectiveness analysis, I will identify new approaches to monitoring and surveillance and evaluate the influence of the sensitivity of current and future diagnostic tools on different surveillance approaches. This programme of work provides a foundation for objectively meas uring the control and elimination of NTDs and will have application for other tropical diseases.
