My goal is to provide a mechanistic account of motivation in terms of its computational and neural structure. To realise this I will focus on how distinct motivational axes, for example those reflecting invigorating and directing effects, impact on behaviour. I see this characterisation of the architecture of motivation in the normal brain as an essential step towards addressing how motivational processes are compromised in disease states. Thus, my focus on motivation will al so afford me an opportunity to pursue an even more challenging goal and address how motivational processes are compromised in psychopathology, for example in clinical depression. This new extension of my research will realise a vision of providing a neuroscientific perspective regarding determinants of behaviour, where motivation is a fundamental component, so as to inform a theoretically enriched understanding of its aberrant expression in psychiatric states.
