PH46A is a new anti-inflammatory small molecule to be developed for Ulcerative Colitis (UC). UC is a life-long, relapsing disease, manifested by bloody diarrhoea which may be incapacitating. It has a high prevalence in developed countries and is emerging worldwide in all countries undergoing socioeconomic development. UC affects young people at a productive phase of life, causes much personal suffering, work absenteeism, and is a huge burden on health services. While immunomodulatory biologics have been developed for the minority of patients with severe disease, no New Chemical Entity (NCE) has been specifically developed for the majority of patients who have mild/moderate disease in many decades. PH46A can fill this unmet clinical need. PH46A is effective in spontaneous and induced animal models of colitis (IL-10-/-, DSS), with responses equivalent to steroids but without the toxicity.
