Arthritis Research UK Primary Care Centre

A new national centre will test which treatments for arthritis and back pain actually work in the real world of GP surgeries and physiotherapy clinics. Most research on musculoskeletal conditions has been done in hospitals or specialised clinics, not in the everyday settings where family doctors, nurses and physiotherapists actually treat patients. This means that many treatments proven effective in controlled trials may not work as well—or may not be practical—in a busy GP practice. The centre aims to close that gap by studying not just what treatments are most effective, but also how to deliver them in routine clinical care. If the centre succeeds, it could change how millions of people with osteoarthritis and back pain are managed by their local healthcare teams. Instead of relying on hospital referrals or treatments that are difficult to implement in primary care, patients might receive evidence-based care directly from their family doctor or physiotherapist. The centre also aims to raise the profile of primary care research itself, an area that has historically attracted little funding or attention.
