Over the next four years, SAVAC 2.0 proposes accelerating the development of a Strep A vaccine through three cross-disciplinary workstreams: 1. Preparing for vaccine trials, 2. Preparing industry, and 3. Preparing non-industry stakeholders. In workstream 1, ‘Preparing for vaccine trials’, SAVAC will gather the epidemiological, economic and societal data that is currently lacking, while simultaneously strengthening surveillance, laboratory and potential for clinical trial capacity through a network of sentinel sites in low- and middle-income countries. In workstream 2, ‘Preparing industry’, SAVAC will engage with vaccine developers and manufacturers to highlight the need for a Strep A vaccine, discuss the favourable business case, and understand the barriers to vaccine development with a view to accelerating the Strep A vaccine pipeline. In workstream 3, ‘Preparing non-industry stakeholders’, SAVAC will engage with relevant non-industry stakeholders (WHO, global funders, national policymakers, NITAGs, experts in laboratory and safety surveillance) to address barriers and enhance implementation efforts for a future Strep A vaccine.
