Supporting Longform output Open Access

In plain English

AI plain-English summary

Scholarly books on health and biomedical topics will soon flow through a single automated pipeline that makes them freely available to anyone with an internet connection. Currently, researchers who write monographs and book chapters face a fragmented system for making their work open access. While funders like Wellcome and UKRI now require these long-form outputs to be publicly available, no consolidated infrastructure exists to handle the deposit, formatting, and distribution of book-length research. This means compliance is patchy, and many publicly funded books remain behind paywalls or are difficult to discover. The project brings together three existing platforms—OAPEN, Europe PMC, and NCBI Bookshelf—to build an end-to-end workflow. It will accept book files, convert them into standardised XML, store the full text, and display it in Europe PMC, the same database that already hosts millions of open-access journal articles. The work proceeds in three phases: technical setup, large-scale processing of eligible content, then ongoing operation as a routine service. If successful, this infrastructure will quietly strengthen the backbone of open science. Researchers, clinicians, and the public will find and reuse book-length research as easily as they now find journal articles. The system is designed to expand, so additional funders can join later, widening access to publicly funded knowledge without requiring each institution to build its own solution.

View original technical description
Scholarly monographs are an important vehicle for sharing research, advancing education, and informing practice in the health and biomedical sciences. While mandates from Wellcome, UKRI, and other research funders increasingly require long form outputs to be made openly available, there is a lack of consolidated infrastructure that would support seamless deposit, processing, and dissemination. This project will establish an integrated, scalable workflow to support the open access archiving and discoverability of life science books and book chapters. A collaboration across OAPEN, Europe PMC, and NCBI Bookshelf will develop and implement an end-to-end process for compliant book deposit, XML transformation, and full text storage and display in Europe PMC. The project will be delivered in three phases: initial technical setup, full scale processing of eligible content, and ongoing delivery as a business-as- usual process. Once established, this workflow will enable policy compliance, strengthen open infrastructure, and enhance the visibility and reuse of long form outputs. Ultimately, this initiative will bolster equitable access to publicly funded research and support future participation by additional Europe PMC funders.
