Valvular heart disease (VHD) is a condition where the heart valves become narrowed or leaky, making it harder for the heart to pump blood. It is increasingly common in older people, affecting up to one in five people over 75, but many cases go undiagnosed. People with VHD have a higher risk of death and hospitalisation than the general population, yet we know little about how patients are diagnosed, what treatments they receive, and how their care affects their long-term health and healthcare costs. In this project, we will use large national datasets that link GP records, hospital care, and death registrations to build a complete picture of VHD in the UK. We will describe who is most affected, what other health conditions they live with, and how they are treated. We will then analyse outcomes such as surgery, hospitalisation, and survival, comparing different patient groups. Finally, we will estimate the costs of different treatment pathways and, if possible, use modelling to predict the most cost-effective strategies. This research will provide evidence to improve patient care and guide NHS policy.
